Virginia Groundwater Statutes and Regulations
Federal Environmental Laws
Control Board has the authority to regulate groundwater withdrawals in the
Commonwealth. Senate Bill 1221 (2003) authorized the SWC to undertake a water supply
planning program. Private water well construction is regulated by the VA Dept. of Health
under Section 32 1-176 of the Virginia Code. Drinking water standards (see EPA Website
below) are enforced by the VDH.
Senate Bill 569 to establish a Water Supply Advisory
Committee has passed the Senate and House and is
now awaiting action by the Governor.
